Amigo Hermano, 19.09 Het ziet ernaar uit dat men hier nog niet begrepen heeft dat Nederland niet uitsluitend uit Holland bestaat. Zo heb ik zojuist vastgesteld dat de voetbalwedstrijd van vanavond op de Spaanse televisie is aangekondigd met España - Holanda. Als ik zo naar de opstelling van het Nederlands elftal kijk - in mijn brief van vandaag - stel ik vast dat er slechts één voetballer in een 'Hollands' elftal speelt. Dat is Paul Bosvelt van Feijenoord. Paul is echter uit onze Graafschap afkomstig. De Spanjaarden zouden er derhalve beter aan doen om in het vervolg als vanouds over Los Países Bajos te spreken. Wellicht is het in de toekomst dan ook een idee om eens een vertegenwoordigend elftal van de Benelux vast te stellen. Ik kom op deze gedachte vanwege de brief die ik naar aanleiding van de toekenning van de Four Freedoms Award op 11 mei 1996 ten behoeve van Su Real Majestad don Juan Carlos aan de Roosevelt Stichting heb doen toekomen in Middelburg. Deze brief staat in het Engels beschreven in mijn Letters to Diana, Princess of Wales d.d. 12 februari 1997 en luidt alsvolgt:
"Majesty, Concerning the relationship between Heydanus, Erasmus and Cervantes I have the honour to tell You the following story. During many ages the people of the Iberian continent has been fighting a long struggle of more than seven centuries against the representatives of a culture who had occupied the actual Spanish territory. From the small areas of León and Old Castile the authentical inhabitants started the combat to reconquest their right to express themselves freely and to be able to live according to the norms of their own faith. Also from our regions representatives of the noble families rushed into their defense. I can limitate myself by mentionning the names of Charles Martel and Charlemagne, but there were more who remain relatively hidden in history of European society. At this historical moment we find ourselves on a historical place that evoques the thought of the existance of the powerful noble families of the Heydenrijk, the Western European civilization of the sixth and seventh century. In this town Middelburg we remind for example a descendant of that civilization, Man of State Gaspar van der Heyden, also called Heydanus. During the government of Emperor Charles V Gaspar van der Heyden was born in 1530 in Mechelen, between Antwerp and Brussels, as the son of the noble family of Hainaut. Just like the christians from Your country were convinced of the truth of the norms of their faith Gaspar must have felt dat convictions are a product of the cultures giving us our right of existance. From the first confrontation with the spiritual values of the roman church until his death in 1586 Heydanus dedicated his whole life on the defense of the convictions of the inhabitants of our low countries and became the founder of the Reformed Church of the Netherlands. Perhaps superfluous to mention that his initiatives caused the Dutch-Spanish conflict of 1568 till 1648. From 1566 till 1578 Heydanus had his residence here in Middelburg. He was a good friend of Prince William of Orange and Marnix of Saint Aldegonde, the writer of our national anthem. On the 12th of June 1575 Gaspar was a witness at the marriage of Prince William and Princess Charlotte de Bourbon. A spiritual ancestor of Gaspar van der Heyden was Erasmus of ROTTERDAM (1465-1536). He had a very good relationship with Spain. He ever said: "I owe more to Spain than to my allies and which other nation however". The proclamation at that time of the Unity of Religion by the Catholic King and Queen although caused the rejection of his books. Erasmus had manifested himself as the advocate of a dared ideal of religious freedom: he preached an internalized christianity that should abandon dogmas, ceremonies and rules. Between 1522 and 1525 Spanish erasmism was born. After having established Emperor Charles V in Valladolid in 1522 the Spanish philosophers Vergara, Gattinara and Valdés became strongly under the influence of Erasmus. In Spain particularly the erasmian ideas about the law of love and peace found a response. Erasmism reaped its most important triumphs in Alcalá de Henares. In 1525 the printer of Alcalá printed the most important works of Erasmus, like the Enquiridion or the Handbook for the Christian Knight. In 1508 Erasmus already wrote his Praise of Lunacy. In the same city of Alcalá de Henares in the year 1547 the famous writer don Miguel de Cervantes y Saavedra was born, just like Heydanus as the son of a noble family. Their will not be any doubt that the thoughts of Erasmus have considerably influenced the spirit of don Miguel. From 1559 the Council of the Inquisition forbid the greatest part of the religious works of Erasmus and many erasmists were convicted to prison and even to the stake. In that atmosphere Cervantes - with his critical mind - evidently could not express his erasmian ideas in the open. Although Cervantes lived some time later the power of the Inquisition still remained considerable. Consequently it was very probable that Cervantes exposed his ideas in his Don Quijote under the cover of the lunacy of his main character. A similar idea we also find in the Praise of Lunacy of Erasmus. In this booklet lunacy talks and says: "The truth is hated by kings. But with my lunes it is just so curious, that not only true observations, but even direct terms of abuse are heard at with pleasure; yes, the same declaration produced by the mouth of a wise man, that would have cost him his head, produces, heard from a lune, incredible pleasure." If the personalities that surrounded don Quijote not had held him for a lune, don Quijote would have landed in prison on the first occasion. The erasmism of Cervantes can fairly well derive from a direct approach to and a thorough contemplation on the work of Erasmus, since Cervantes was a pupil of the Madrilan humanist Juan López de Hoyos, who quoted the name of Erasmus in 1569, ten years after the index of inquisitor Valdés. The Praise of Lunacy dealt with universal madness. It was the satyre on the ideals and human illusions. In this booklet Erasmus ridiculized the noble ideals at the time and honoured lunacy. This way he expressed that passion leads to madness, that this madness causes a vital impulse, so much that this could contribute to the progress of the world. This social problem of the end of the fifteenth century we also see reflected in the don Quijote. The passion of don Quijote to read romances of chivalry made him mad and on a certain moment he took the decision, or: he received the vital impulse to travel around the world to attack every injustice, to put right what is wrong and to protect widows and orphans. Cervantes introduced in the Quijote the duality of the most supreme and the ridiculous, that Erasmus had labelled as essential characteristic of lunacy. In the supreme illusion of the madness of don Quijote we find the highest possible ideals of christian humanism, such as charity and inner devotion and still much more which is to be found in the Enquiridion. The Enquiridion was translated in Castillian in 1524 and the success was so great that no other religious book ever had found its equal since the introduction of the art of printing in Spain. It appeared in 1526 with the inquisitorial approval of don Alonso Manrique. In this book Erasmus invited everyone to let to be born in him or herself a new human being. The christian knight, whose ideal image he painted, had to go his way with invulnerable armour, shining in power and faith. He had to ride his horse with open vision and not paying attention on death. The most essential characteristic of christianity was according to Erasmus rule five of the Enquiridion, in which he stated 'that one should pay little attention to all visible matters and how good it is to direct ourselves always to the invisible things". According to Desiderius Erasmus one had to raise from the flesh to the spirit, from the visible to the understandable and to get into practice the ideas of the spirit. Thoughts that have not lost their actual value. We find still more influences of Erasmus in the thoughts of don Miguel, like the pastoral ideal, the moral fantasy, the probability of the fantasies, popular wisdom, the ideal of simpleness and the ethics to be prepared to forgiveness and resignation. Cervantes designed an own vision of the world, based on expressions of people of all parts of society. Cervantes based his vision on the world on what him appeared to be and not on uniform objectivities. Cervantes and Erasmus strengthen themselves for the spontaneous right, a critical attitude against reality, traces of subjectivity, the autonomous use of sense, both concerning secular as sacral matters, the from individual virtue dependant honour and the free will.
What is the significance
of the situation for nowadays?
The free will and freedom of opinion form the basic conditions
for the development of the European Union. A new European faith
is necessary for our youth and new norms, based on ethics, integrity
and human dignity. The Dutch Spanish conflict ended in 1648 with
the Treaty of Munster. The contacts between our countries diminished,
but many Dutch hispanists remained the contact with Your country
and educated many Dutch speaking people to be a teacher in Spanish
in the Netherlands, inclusive Belgium. Thanks to their contribution
from 1998 Spanish will be accepted officially in the educational
system of our country. Exactly 350 years after the Treaty of Munster.
At the same time we need to open a labour market for our future
pupils.
Majesty,
Your presence here, as the Sovereign who restored democracy in
Spain, is a prove of the strong relationship we have, the coronation
of the ideas of Cervantes,
Erasmus
and Heydanus and point
of departure for a future fertile collaboration. I hope to meet
You in the year 2000. Thank you very much."
Wellicht zien we elkaar in Blair Castle op 28 december 2000. Het Valkhof is immers nog niet gereed. Bovendien heb ik Diana ten vervolge van deze brief op 12 februari 1997 geschreven: "King Juan Carlos could not give me a place in the ceremony of the Four Freedoms Award. He had to choose for the traditional protocol, but I congratulate YOU on your first television programme about Angola in which I see reflected all the ideas expressed above. It gives me the conviction that We share the same ideas and that you and I are even so worried about intolerance as Erasmus, Cervantes and Heydanus and I even will add their English spiritual partner Thomas Moore."

Nederland heeft aan
zijn morele plicht voldaan. De Spaanse televisie toonde nog wel
enkele beelden van zogenaamde 'Hollanders' met oranje klompen
op hun hoofd. Het wordt dus hoogtijd dat er aan dat imago iets
verandert. De 'cabezazo' van Fernando Hierro was er overigens
één om in te lijsten. Ook Jerry's reactie. Het was
op zijn gezicht te lezen dat hij er nog een tijdje over moest
nadenken of hij zich al dan niet ter aarde wilde laten bestellen.
Uiteindelijk heeft hij die keuze maar gemaakt. Ik heb de wedstrijd
hier uiteraard via de Spaanse televisie gadegeslagen. Het is mij
daarbij opgevallen dat het mijn nieuwe landgenoten nogal ontbreekt
aan een goede kennnis van de Nederlandse taal. Zo werd Patrick
Kluivert voortdurend met Kloebert aangeduid. Bij Mark van Bommel
kwam de verslaggever niet verder dan Bommel. Hij is klaarblijkelijk
nog niet op de hoogte gesteld van het gesprek dat ik met diens
naamgenoot Antoon heb gevoerd. Alles heeft zijn tijd nodig. Zodra
mijn boek door Toon in het Duits vertaald is hebben we dat ook
meteen achter de rug onder het motto 'Regeren is Vooruitzien.'
Kloebert liet overigens nog wel enige aardige hoogstandjes zien.
Maar ik werd uiteindelijk toch blij verrast met onze eigen Dukenburgse
Roy Makaay van wie ik verwacht dat hij binnenkort weer in het
shirt van de FC Keizer Karel gaat voetballen. De Spaanse reporter
reageerde hier immers niet zo enthousiast als normaliter het geval
is zodra hij op zondagmiddag een doelpunt maakt voor Deportivo
de la Coruña. De volgende kreet is hier dan te doen gebruikelijk:
¡Góóóól, gol, gol, gol, gol! Makááááááááááááááááááááááy..... !(circa dertig minuten) Dat geldt ook voor onze goede vriend Philip Cocu uit Arnhem: ¡Cocóe...............! etc. Het doet mij echter deugd dat onze alumno positivo weer eens een goede avond heeft beleefd op ons nieuwe schiereiland: Louis van Gaal gematigd tevreden. Het hierna volgende commentaar heb ik overigens ook voor kennisgeving aangenomen, aangezien ik uitsluitend voor positivisme heb gekozen vanaf 1986 reeds. Well done! Na afloop heb ik de vraaggesprekken met de Spaanse voetballers gevolgd. De spelers bleken 'muy satisfechos'. Hetgeen ik niet direct had verwacht na deze 'nederlaag'. Er is dus een goede basis voor rood-paarse samenwerking gecreëerd. De Spanjaarden spraken met veel respect over onze landgenoten in het hoge noorden. El País: DEPORTES FÚTBOL España pierde ante una Holanda muy discreta (!!!) Sergi y Bosvet (Spreek uit: Bosbed) disputan un balón, ayer en Sevilla (E. Morenatti, Efe). Ook aan de leesvaardigheid van de Spanjaarden zal nog hard gewerkt moeten worden door het Instituto Cervantes Benelux. Belangrijke ontwikkelingen in de Verenigde Staten vragen vandaag de belangrijkste aandacht binnen het 'Spin in het web verhaal'. Gisteren ontving ik wederom post van Cesar Rennert uit New York. Deze keer verzonden vanuit de Dynamostraat 7, 1014 BN Amsterdam The Netherlands en gericht aan Mr. John Van der Heyden INSTITUTO CERVANTES BENELUX Torremolinos Ma Spain. Dit - naar ik aanneem - naar aanleiding van het faxbericht dat ik Cesar op 8 oktober 1996 heb doen toekomen (ingevoegd). Ik ga derhalve over tot de berichtgeving omtrent de Amerikaanse Presidentsverkiezingen in dat verband. Er is klaarblijkelijk van stropdas gewisseld. Gore doet rivaal Bush 'vredesvoorstel' Megaproces Ik wacht de ontwikkelingen dus met belangstelling af, maar denk wel dat je Hans van Helden inmiddels kunt benaderen met het voorstel om in januari naar Amerika te gaan voor een paar dagen. Dat zal hij leuk vinden. Hier in Spanje wordt de zaak ook scherp in de gaten gehouden. Er wordt in deze zaak verschillend gedacht. De heer Bush kan rekenen op de sympathie van de Spanjaarden, aangezien hij - naar ik mij heb laten vertellen - het Spaans beter zou beheersen dan zijn collega Gore. Zaak is dat hier op korte termijn een oplossing voor wordt gevonden. Zo kan het immers niet langer doorgaan. Ik zie namelijk dat de heer ELTON JOHN klaarblijkelijk ook goede sier heeft gemaakt van mijn royalties die wij nog tegoed hebben inzake zijn lied Candle in the Wind. Zoals al eerder medegedeeld had ik de heer John met kerst 1997 nog uitgenodigd voor een gesprek in Londen. Hij is echter niet komen opdagen. Ik ben derhalve op eerste kerstdag alléén naar Althorp House gereden.
Vandaag lees ik ELTON JOHN spendeert Hfl 1 miljoen aan bloemen. Het begint mij dus allengs duidelijk te worden wat hij met ons geld heeft gedaan. Dit betreft exact het tijdvak dat ik thans in behandeling heb inzake mijn Letters to Diana, Princess of Wales. Het is mijns inziens dus ook een goede zaak dat Albert Gore heeft besloten de zaak te voegen en te deponeren bij The Supreme Court in Washington. Wellicht kan daar nog een advocaat van de ABN Amro aan worden toegevoegd. Mede in verband met de laatste ontwikkelingen inzake Cervantesonline. Toch actie justitie bij ABN Amro Een participatie van Tiscali in CERVANTESONLINE heb ik vooralsnog niet voor ogen, ondanks de verwoede pogingen die het bedrijf onderneemt om in Nederland naamsbekendheid te verwerven. Het wordt dus hoogtijd dat Wim Dik aan het werk kan voor onze holding. Ik heb al zo lang niets meer van hem gehoord sinds Liesbeth weg is bij de Baak. De Italiaanse internetprovider stelde echter ook dat de geraamde bedragen geen rekening houden met de overname van World Online. Hoewel het logo van de Nederlandse provider al wel op de website van Tiscali prijkt, is World Online kennelijk nog niet welkom in de boekhoudkundige ramingen. That's not done. Pronken met de naam, zonder overeenkomst. Concurrentievervalsing dus. Over de overname, toch een zeer belangrijke deal voor Tiscali, repte het bedrijf met geen woord. De Spaanstalige markt omvat 400 miljoen consumenten. Dus ook evenzovele potentiële internetgebruikers. De lessen van World Online worden in Italië goed ter harte genomen. Heel verstandig van hen. Ik sluit echter niet uit dat wij in de nabije toekomst ons ook nog een luchthaven kunnen eigenmaken in het verlengde van de afspraken die ik met Theo van Heijningen heb gemaakt.
Schiphol gaat naar de beurs Er is dus weer werk aan de winkel voor de Wethouder van Economische Zaken van de Gemeente Haarlemmermeer. Een golden share-constructie zou buitenlandse beleggers kunnen afschrikken en deelnemingen over onze grenzen belemmeren, waardoor de opbrengst van de beursgang flink lager uit kan vallen. Dat is dus allemaal positief nieuws. Je kunt deze brief daarom vermenigvuldigen ten behoeve van de direct belanghebbenden. De kosten kunnen in de toekomst aan de holding worden gedeclareerd, zodra we naar de beurs gaan. Uiteraard maakt dit verhaal straks ook nog deel uit van Gran Hermano 15. Het eerste stuk daarvan heeft Huub inmiddels al ontvangen, als het goed is. Ik zit echter niet hard te wachten op een romance met mijn 'gele partner'. Ik maak echter nog wel een uitzondering. We kunnen immers niet alles aan The Supreme Court of Washinton D.C. overlaten. Uiteindelijk heeft The Magistrate of London terzake nog het één na laatste woord. En mijn grote bescheidenheid verbiedt mij te zeggen wie het laatste woord zal hebben. Ik laat graag aan Harry Starren over dat bekend te maken. Van de Open Universiteit kreeg ik namelijk ook nog bericht dat Cees Datema zijn functie als collegevoorzitter heeft overgedragen aan Thijs Wöltgens, ons welbekend in Kasteel Terworm.
Zo lees ik in Modulair nummer 2 Jaargang 16 d.d. 18 oktober 2000 Wöltgens: 'Discussie over voortbestaan OUNL behoort tot verleden'. Ze zitten er ontspannen bij, de nieuwe collegevoorzitter drs. Thijs Wöltgens en collegelid prof.dr. Fred Mulder aan de grote, houten tafel in de nog kale kamer van het nog aan te trekken 'derde collegelid'. Het is een beetje dringen hier op de begane grond van Madrid 'verontschuldigen zij zich.' Het ziet er naar mijn stellige overtuiging dus naar uit dat een fusie met de Universidad a Distancia in voorbereiding is. Ik neem dus ook gaarne in dat college plaats. Uiteindelijk sta ik als voormalig lid van de werkgroep deficiënties mede aan de basis van dat bedrijf. Bovendien kan ik mij geen betere 'content' wensen binnen onze Core Business. De details werk ik gaarne met de heren uit. Mijn preferente verblijfsadres is uiteraard alreeds bekend. De voorkeur gaat weer uit naar Kamer 7.
Liefde is... ...hem afhalen. Dat is alweer een hele tijd geleden. Op 19 oktober 1990 om precies te zijn. Vier jaar later heb ik dienaangaande deze tekening nog gemaakt.
Rond die tijd werd ik nog wel vaker opgehaald op het station van Leiden. Door mijn Number One 'Poppetje. Op dinsdag 12 december kom ik weer naar Nederland met vlucht AHV 6114K. Vertrek Málaga 11.35. Vermoedelijke aankomst Schiphol 14.15 uur. Ik zou het zeer op prijs stellen als ik dan opnieuw wordt opgewacht door een goede collega. Dan kunnen we meteen weer verder vooruit met ONS BEDRIJF HARTELIJKE GROET.
